Odour Control

project > Overviewdx

An European survey shows the need for an integral odour control system. This would cover crucial issues like paper product quality (bad paper odour), occupational safety (max. allowable concentration values of hazardous volatile compounds), sound environmental performance and safeguarding of the location (emissions). Also odour control system based on odour monitoring systems and countermeasures would lead to cost savings in manufacturing resulting from better product quality and reduced hazard odour emissions.

Biological odour formation and detection are complex and challenging processes whose full description and control requires a critical mass of scientific skills, which are part of the project partners competences. The project approach aims therefore to ensure progress beyond the current state-of-the-art and to makes it possible to cover all subjects and tasks relevant for an integral solution for successfully overcoming odour problems.

The main objective of the project is therefore developing an integral odour control system for the paper industry based on forward looking biotechnological, chemical, physical and process engineering tools. Bringing together SMEs, RTD performers and end-users the proposed S&T approach addresses objectives in research and innovation which cannot be tackled by any other approach.
The scientific and technological excellence of the project is based on developing and compiling forward-looking highly innovative products, in particular

  • unique ready-to-use VIT-kit based on gene probe technology for specific odour former identification
  • Artificial Olfactory Systems AOS, highly reliable and sensible to relevant odour emissions
  •  forward-looking biological treatment technology for emission control, so called biokidney concept
  • environmentally sound additives to replace biocides

The potential impact of ‘Odour Control’ can be summarised as follows:

  • Safeguarding of the location by minimising odour emissions into the environment / neighbourhood
  • Lowering problems with neighbourhood complaints rising from unpleased paper odour
  • Occupational safety/working conditions – increased employees safety by reduced biocide use
  • Lowering the costs by reducing customer complaints
  • Increasing competitiveness of involved SMEs
  • Supporting the Council Directive 98/8 BPD.
